We have focused our efforts on the newer Plex Media Player app instead and recommend moving to that app. This blog post was originally published in September 2014. It is equipped with real-time graphs for analyzing the passwords and is open-source software.Note: Plex Home Theater is deprecated and no longer in development. It runs on a number of Operating Systems like Mac OS X, Unix/Linux, and Windows Operating System. It is a free password cracker software which is based on the effective implementation of the rainbow tables.
![]() ![]() Top App 2014 Mac OS XWhat I liked about Front Row and the earlier Plex was that I could sit down and scroll through the menu with my remote, but once this problem started up, sometimes the volume would go up or iTunes would start playing music or the remote simply wouldn't function. On the Plex forums, people recommended some Apple Remote app, the name of which I can't remember, but that just made things more complicated. The first problem I had and still have every time I install Plex is that it messes up the Apple remote functionality. Then a few years ago things started going wrong. It was a reasonable solution as far as I was concerned. I want it to work when I open it, like Front Row did and Plex used to. It was a cycle I grew tired of.In the end, what this comes down to is that I don't want to spend time messing about with an app for TV and film. Netflix and The Daily Show, the only things I watched on Plex, would work for a week, break for a month. Although the shows were recognized properly in XBMC, I really did not like that app. Also, streaming functions were always breaking. However, Plex uses some arcane method of storing and naming files that is not quite XBMC, so my shows were recognized as all kinds of strange things, but almost never what they were. I don't want to waste time programing a remote that I use at most once a week.On top of that, I had decided to keep some shows outside of iTunes. To keep this structure I have to add these folders by selecting "add…" multiple times (about 30 to 50 times). I do not want to open folders for these kind of movies and select a file - this does not make any sense. And if the usual advice is, that I should extract & convert the movies to mkv, then it is less than acceptable.2.) The idea of a library to store informations might be good (or necessary) and it might fit for many people, but it is complicating my life because I have already an organization / structure for my media. As Pixeltrance said: who needs to watch TV when you have this to read? Reaching for the Popcorn, too.But less stars for the features - even if it is free of charge:1.) As Mcjf said: DVDs (and EyeTV movies) are displayed as folder and not as one movie file. Visual studio for mac creating universal windows projectI was impressed about movies I have never seen and do not have. But there might be someone else?4.) If the metadata is wrong, then my media titles are renamed. Do not get this wrong - I guess they are not saving these informations. There might be a setting to stop this, but I do not like the default idea to inform "the world" about all the media which I have. Interface (with matching theme music to your fav. Just take a look at the second screenshot here: 1/3 of the screen is used for gimmicks and the description on the left side is very small.I'd recommend Plex if you like an easy setup, a nice graph. The contrast could be better… and there could be less gimmicks (aka cool layout) and more space for the informations I need. Thank you.And just so people know, even though I am a paying PlexPass user, I think that the Mac versions are slighty neglected compared to others. Basically, local offline access control. But why is there no local access control? I mean if I want to restrict people's access to my Plex Media Server it can only be done via PlexPass, meaning it needs an internet connection. Why can't you just implement a local username/passwort database so not everyone on the same network can access my Plex media server. If Firecore can do it, why can't Plex?- As I said, I totally understand that they want to charge you extra for some features. The usual advice you'll get is to extract & convert the movie to an mkv movie which Plex can read & stream. But if handling/streaming VIDEO_TS folders is so impossible, how come that a jailbroken ATV2 can access & stream VIDEO_TS folders and even ISO disk images?!? No conversion necessary!Obviously, this is a major limitation of Plex and not one of some protocol. Paying extra for some features is ok and probably helps them to release frequent updates.BUT they really need to address these two issues:- I've ripped many of my DVDs to my computer (every DVS gets you a VIDEO_TS folder that contains the movie, the DVD menu and the extras). But Plex cannot / will not work with VIDEO_TS folders. The help forums are terrible. Documentation absolutely stinks. 8 has been installed since 2008, 9 has been installed from the start of the betas but I have not "released" it to my family. In a nutshell, this is a geeks breakfast and getting more so.No overview exists to explain what it does, how its capable of being run and where to locate the files you need as they are scattered all over the web. Once you match that, you'll rule the market.I have Plex 8 running on an Mac Mini HTPC and Plex 9 running on an iMac. Just take a look at what Firecore did for the Apple TV. )I really really hope you will reconsider supporting VIDEO_TS folders. If you want simplicity, give up the metadata feature and go with a dedicated media box.I just spent the afternoon trying the latest version. Navigation is poor compared to 8, skins changed with the advent of 9.5 which meant yet another skin.If you want to complicate your life, Plex is a great step forward. Pre Snow Leopard versions do not exist (you cannot take an old Mac and make it an htpc).I've tried to hand 9 over to the family for years. OSX 10.8 broke it for a while. Media scanning, while improved, still leaves a lot to be desired. More people at the support forums are facing this issue and response from developers has been nil so far. And it's lost access to NetFlix and other online entertainment even though it claims the plugins are live and running. That I had to do so was a minus. I was able to improve on that a bit by hacking it. And to get it to access all of your materials correctly, expect to do some work. It's regular expression access to identifying files is rather limited.
